Cultural Capital

At Bishop's Castle Primary School, our aim is for our children to join us on a learning journey which will equip them to succeed in their future experiences.

We want our children to leave in Year 6 with a range of skills and knowledge supporting a love of learning and feeding ambition. It is important to recognise that everyone has cultural capital – knowledge, skills and behaviours – and that these accumulate over time through many different experiences and opportunities.

Cultural capital is understood to contribute to success in life e.g. being able to perform well in school, knowing how to talk in different social groups, accessing higher education and being successful in work or a chosen career. Every child and family who joins our setting will have their own knowledge and experiences that will link to their culture and wider family. This might include: languages, beliefs, traditions, cultural and family heritage, interests, travel and work.

Our curriculum at Bishop's Castle Primary School is underpinned by four drivers: Confident Communicators, Growth Mindset, Widening Horizons, and Healthy Body/Healthy Mind. They are derived from an exploration of the backgrounds of our students and our beliefs about high quality education and our values. They are used to ensure we give our students broad and ambitious curriculum opportunities. Through exploration of our curriculum area on our website, you will be able to find a wealth of information regarding the curriculum offer at Bishop's Castle Primary School including Curriculum Subject Statements and Curriculum Enhancement documents.
