  • OPAL ( Outdoor Play & Learning)

    Learning Beyond the Classroom

At our school, we believe that play is an essential part of every child's development. That is why we are proud to be part of the OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) programme - a nationally recognised initiative that transforms playtimes into rich opportunities for creativity, exploration, teamwork and wellbeing.

Through OPAL, we are creating an environment where every child can enjoy high-quality outdoor play experiences every day, whatever the weather.

    What is OPAL?

The Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme is based on the understanding that children learn through play and that high-quality play opportunities improve children’s happiness, confidence, resilience, and social skills.

OPAL encourages schools to make the most of their outdoor spaces by providing children with a wide variety of imaginative, creative, physical, and social play experiences.

    The programme supports:

    • Physical health and wellbeing
    • Creativity and imagination
    • Communication and teamwork
    • Problem-solving and resilience
    • Independence and confidence
    • Inclusion and friendship-building

    Why Play Matters

Research shows that children spend up to 20% of their time at school playing. We believe this time should be exciting, meaningful, and beneficial to every child.

    Play helps children:

    • Build friendships and social skills
    • Develop emotional resilience
    • Improve concentration and readiness for learning
    • Stay active and healthy
    • Explore risks safely and responsibly
    • Gain confidence and independence

At our school, we value play as an important part of childhood and learning.

Our Commitment to Safe and Adventurous Play

We understand that children need opportunities to challenge themselves and take manageable risks as part of growing and learning.

Our staff carefully supervise and support play while encouraging children to:

    • Make decisions independently
    • Assess risks appropriately
    • Develop resilience and perseverance
    • Learn through exploration and experience

Safety remains a priority, and all activities are planned and monitored to ensure children can enjoy adventurous play in a secure environment.

    All Weather Play

OPAL encourages children to enjoy outdoor play throughout the year. We ask families to support this by ensuring children come to school with suitable clothing for the weather, including:

    • Waterproof coats
    • Wellies or sturdy outdoor shoes
    • Warm clothing during colder months
    • Sun hats and sunscreen during warmer weather

We believe there is no such thing as bad weather — only unsuitable clothing.

    How Families Can Support OPAL

Families play an important role in the success of our OPAL programme. You can support us by:

    • Donating suitable loose parts and play resources
    • Providing weather-appropriate clothing
    • Encouraging outdoor play at home
    • Supporting our fundraising and community projects
    • Sharing ideas and feedback with the school

We regularly welcome donations of clean, safe materials such as:

    • Pots, pans, and kitchen utensils
    • Tyres and crates
    • Dressing-up clothes
    • Small world toys
    • Tubes, gutters, and building materials

If you would like to contribute resources, please contact the school office.

The Benefits We Are Already Seeing

Since introducing OPAL, we have seen many positive changes across the school community, including:

    • Happier and more engaged children
    • Improved behaviour at playtimes
    • Increased confidence and independence
    • Stronger friendships and teamwork
    • More active and inclusive play opportunities
    • Greater creativity and imagination

Children are developing important life skills while having fun and enjoying their time outdoors.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Will children get muddy?

Yes — sometimes they will. Outdoor play can be messy, and this is part of the learning experience. We encourage children to explore and engage fully with their environment.

    Is OPAL safe?

Yes. Staff supervise all play areas and ensure activities are suitable and well-managed. Children are also taught how to assess and manage risks safely.

    Can all children take part?

Absolutely. OPAL is designed to be inclusive and accessible for all children, regardless of age, ability, or interests.

    What happens in bad weather?

Children will continue to play outdoors whenever possible. We encourage families to provide appropriate clothing so children can enjoy outdoor play comfortably throughout the year.
